The Position:

The Accounts Specialist role is responsible for preparation of IPSAS-compliant financial statements and other financial reports, coordinating annual closure of accounts, leading the accounting in selected process areas, and providing guidance, support and oversight to UNFPA field offices and HQ units in the areas of accounting and financial operations.

Job Purpose:

The Accounts Specialist position is part of the Finance Branch, Division for Management Services. The Finance Branch is responsible for global financial management, statutory and specialized reporting, and for policy development and the provision of advice, operational guidance, support and oversight in the areas of general accounting, accounts payable, contributions receivable, other accounts receivable, fund management, donor reporting, treasury management, management of cash transfer to IPs, and inventory management. The Branch also plays a key role in the custody and distribution of financial resources and the monitoring of expenditures and the strengthening of ongoing compliance with the International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS).

Qualifications and Experience  

Education:

  • Advanced university degree in accounting / financial reporting or related discipline. A recognized professional accounting designation (CPA, CA), together with a bachelor’s degree, will be deemed equivalent to a master’s level degree for this position.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • 5 years of experience in financial management, accounting and/or related area;
  • Experience preparing IPSAS or IFRS-compliant financial statements for multinational organization/s;
  • Experience providing support and guidance to multiple offices / units, especially on remote basis;
  • Advanced knowledge of spreadsheets and experience working in ERP financials. Knowledge of PeopleSoft is a distinct advantage;
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills;
  • Excellent written and spoken communications skills;

Languages:

Fluency in English is required; working knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
