CERN recrute un chef de l’infrastructure électrique, Genève, Suisse

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter – fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Electrical engineering (EN-EL) on a large scale like no other basic science research facility: pushing technical boundaries, engaging in new ways of thinking, of managing, of working. Are you an accomplished electrical engineer, with demonstrated experience in taking your vision from concept to implementation in large industrial contexts, combined with demonstrated leadership of strong technical teams? Are you ready for a new challenge in your career? Prove your skills in this unique environment by seizing this opportunity to manage CERN’s complex electrical infrastructure. Take part!

The Engineering department (EN) pushes the limits of technology to provide innovative research tools to the physics and engineering worldwide community. Within the EN department, the electrical engineering group is responsible for the CERN electrical distribution network. In nominal operating conditions, the network distributes 200 MW to the accelerator complex, the large-scale experimental areas, the computer centre and many office buildings, totalling a yearly power consumption of 1.2 TWh. The group is in charge of the day-to-day operation of the electrical distribution network, including the maintenance, the diagnostics and reconfigurations following faults triggered by events external and internal to the network, the consolidations, the extensions and the upgrades as required by the accelerator complex and the associated experiments or by new projects, the monitoring, the analysis and the projections for the electrical energy consumption, the cabling infrastructure (high and low voltage cables, water cooled cables and controls cables) as well as the optical fibre infrastructure.

Functions

You will be responsible for the performance (availability, quality) of the network, the definition and the implementation of the strategy to match the stringent requirements for the present and for the projected needs, the technical and financial management of the consolidation and upgrade projects as well as the management of the personnel. The group currently comprises over 80 members of personnel.

As a Senior Electrical Engineer, you will:

  • Have expertise in all the domains of responsibility of the group,
  • Lead, supervise and document the studies and operations under the responsibility of the Group,
  • Supervise the preparation of technical specifications for the procurement of the components of the electrical distribution system,
  • Interact with stakeholders to review performance and capture new requirements,
  • Establish, implement and take responsibility for the correct follow-up of safety policies for the equipment and the activities of the group.

As a Manager, you will:

  • Lead a team of engineers and technicians,
  • Manage the financial resources of the group,
  • Structure the group to face the day-to-day challenges of operation, of the projects linked to the evolution of the network and of the preparation for period of long shutdowns of the accelerators,
  • Prepare and implement the strategies for the medium and long-term development of the electrical distribution network,
  • Define the strategy for future tendering process and manage contracts of the groups, including supply of electrical power,
  • Coordinate the electrical projects,
  • Represent the group in working groups, task forces, projects, coordination meetings and cost & schedule reviews.

Qualifications

Master’s degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of electrical engineering or a related field.

Experience:

  • Extensive experience in the design, the operation and the management of high-voltage and low-voltage power networks for a large industrial site;
  • Relevant experience in safety management in the operation of large electrical systems;
  • Relevant experience in project management;
  • Relevant experience in the maintenance management;
  • Proven skills in authoring technical documents and scientific reports;
  • Proven managerial skills with experience in leading large technical teams;
  • Demonstrated experience in contract management.

Technical competencies:

  • Design and modelling of high-voltage electrical circuits and networks: as well as substations;
  • Design and modelling of low-voltage electrical circuits and networks;
  • Knowledge of electromagnetic compatibility, interference and susceptibility: comment:
  • Contract management;
  • Commissioning, maintenance & operation of electrical distribution systems;
  • Knowledge of diesel generators and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS);
  • Knowledge of design, installation and management of cables, including connectors, and optical fibre infrastructures would be an advantage.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Leading with Strength and Credibility;
  • Setting Direction;
  • Bringing the Best out of People;
  • Creating Vision and Strategic Partnerships: participating, encouraging and actively supporting cross-functional and cross-departmental work and projects;
