About the South Sudan programme :

South Sudan is one of the youngest, poorest and least developed countries world-wide. The 2013 outbreak of hostilities has led to thousands of people being killed or wounded, and hundreds of thousands of people being displaced by the violence.  MAG has been successfully working in South Sudan since 2004, to clear landmines/unexploded ordnance and deliver mine risk education to at-risk populations in a constantly challenging environment. We are seeking to recruit a dynamic and driven Country Director to lead our programme in South Sudan, who will have overall responsibility for the delivery of MAGs activities in-country.

 

About the role :

As Country Director, you will be based in Juba but expected to frequently support the teams camping in the field sites.  Reporting to the Regional Director you will be responsible for the effective integration of strategic, programmatic and operational management in compliance with contractual obligations and MAG’s mission and mandate.  You will have a wide variety of strategic responsibilities including contract management, donor liaison, business development, people management, security management, capacity building and risk management. This senior role will provide you with the opportunity to use your people management skills, leading a large team of staff operating across a complex and varied environment. You will also have the opportunity to use your skills in stakeholder management, to take a leading role in donor development, identifying funding opportunities in a demanding donor environment.

 

About you :

You will have extensive experience working overseas at a senior management level in large-scale programmes in the protection and/or humanitarian field. It is essential that you have strong programme management skills, preferably with experience of managing large scale, multi-year projects, ideally from project design through to contract delivery. You will also need demonstrable skills in people and financial management, as well as previous experience working overseas in complex political environments that require tact, sensitivity and relationship-building skills. Previous experience in the mine action sector is highly desirable, however we welcome applications from experienced managers from any development sector. Demonstrable experience of working on gender inclusion initiatives would be highly desirable, a passion and commitment towards diversity, equality and inclusion is essential.

  • Salary : The starting salary package for this position is £68,346 per annum and this increases with service ;
  • Accommodation : MAG will provide accommodation in-country ;
  • Leave : We recognise our staff work hard and need the appropriate time out to stay motivated. You will have a minimum of six weeks out of the programme per year, plus an additional 10 days as South Sudan is categorized as a ‘Hardship’ location ;
  • Flights : MAG provides three international flights home per year (for permanent contracts)/ MAG provides three international flights home per year pro rata if your contract is less than a year (for fixed-term contracts) ;
  • Insurance : All international staff are automatically covered by MAG’s comprehensive insurance package including: Personal accident and medical expenses insurance; Death by natural causes insurance and access to 24-hour medical assistance including evacuation and repatriation.
