Tasks to be accomplished:

– A Technical Report on the Drivers of Dietary Diversity and malnutrition trends among Egyptian children

Methodology :

The consultant will use the most THREE most recent Household Income, Expenditure and Consumption Survey (HIECS) datasets, to perform secondary data analysis. The six main outcomes are: dietary diversity among children aged 6-23 months; animal source food (ASF) intake among children aged 6-23 months; and stunting, wasting, underweight and overweight and obesity among under-5 children. Where data allows, dietary diversity scores and ASF scores for individual children aged 6-23 months and among children aged 24-59 months will be calculated. WHO child growth standards for under-five children will be used to define all anthropometric measures.  Explanatory variables will include child, parental and household characteristics, household dietary diversity, household poverty, minimum meal frequency for children and families where available, household food insecurity, agricultural biodiversity (producing cultivated food crops/ producing animal yields), receiving government social protection (e.g. ration card/pension/benefiting from Takaful and Karama/receiving subsidized bread), maternal height and overweight and obesity. Other variables should be explored as available. The consultant will adapt the most recent UNICEF and FAO definitions of dietary diversity for children and families according to the data available and create appropriate scores. Regression analyses will be used to determine the strength of the contributing factors to each of the six outcomes, with appropriate control for confounding factors.  The trends of dietary diversity and child malnutrition across the three rounds of the last three HIECS datasets will be analyzed, as well as the main drivers of these trends.The consultant is responsible for obtaining all official clearances to use the data.

Qualifications, specialized experience :

Education : Master’s degree in economics, statistics, social science, epidemiology or public health Ph.D. will be an asset.

Experience :

  • At least 10 years of relevant experience in quantitative data analysis.
  • Proven knowledge or experience in nutrition and dietary diversity analysis is desirable.
  • Relevant publication records

Language : English and Arabic proficiency.

 

Condition of work :

The Assignment will be an external output-based Consultancy. The incumbent should carry out the work in direct collaboration with UNICEF Country Office. The assignment will not require continuous presence in the UNICEF Country Office Premises but will entail continuous contact with the direct supervisors and the CSED team. The consultant will use her/his own instruments and will not be given a work station within UNICEF Office.

Clear definitions of explanatory variables as outlined in the methodology section above with additional variables as available; Clear definition of any scores calculated.
