The UNICEF Internship Programme offers qualified and eligible students at both Headquarters (HQ) and Country Offices (CO) the unique opportunity to acquire direct practical experience in UNICEF’s work and the United Nations system under the direct supervision of experienced UNICEF staff.

 

Purpose of the internship :

The WASH section of the South Sudan Country Office implements humanitarian, development, and transitional WASH programming with government, private sector, and non-governmental organizations to provide safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services, infrastructure, and non-food items to the most vulnerable individuals in all states of the country.  This internship will conduct the critical administration roles from the Juba office in support of team members across the country.

 

Context and Brief Program Description :

UNICEF is the co-lead for the water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) Cluster in South Sudan, in addition to implementing development and humanitarian WASH programs in all states of the country.  UNICEF works with government, the private sector, and international and national non-governmental partners to provide safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services, infrastructure, and non-food items to the most vulnerable populations in crisis and development contexts.

During 2020 UNICEF, through direct implementation and implementing partners reached 292,651 people with safe water and 99,417 people with safe sanitation, improving services for emergency affected populations throughout the country in addition to providing 2,910,264 people with WASH supplies through the supply core pipeline.  127,153 people in non- humanitarian situation were provided access to safe water supply.  414 villages were declared open defecation free in 2020 as a result of UNICEF sanitation behaviour change activities.

 

Duties and Responsibilities :

Description of Tasks : Under the direct supervision of the WASH Officer, the WASH intern will support the WASH team to support the following:

  • Organize workshops, including coordination with vendors, partners, and staff for logistics ;
  • Manage travel arrangements for staff and government partners ;
  • Participate in internal and external meetings and document and disseminate meeting summaries with assigned action items and follow-up issues ;
  • Maintain the database of WASH files, including online systems ;
  • Maintain tracking sheets for staff Human Resources documentation and follow up with team members on pending issues related to the section ;
  • Work with Finance and Administration to process financial documents ;
  • Develop tracking tools as defined by needs to improve internal processes.

The selected intern will be supported throughout his/her stay by the UNICEF Country Office in Juba, including being provided with security briefings and a laptop. All transportation to official meetings will be arranged and provided by UNICEF. The selected intern will also receive a monthly stipend.

To be considered for an internship with UNICEF, applicants must meet the following requirements :

  • Current enrolment in, or recent graduation from an undergraduate or master’s program within the last two years in one of the disciplines relevant to the following areas: Business Administration, Development Studies, International Development, Social Sciences, Water or Sanitation Engineering related field, or a relevant field ;
  • Have excellent academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records; and

 

Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Business Administration, Development Studies, International Development, Social Sciences, Water or Sanitation Engineering related field and/or being enrolled in a similar masters course ;
  • Fluent in English ;
  • Strong writing skills and proficient working with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook ;
  • Cultural sensitivity ;
  • Team worker.

Conditions of Intern :

Start date 01 April 2021

Duty station : Juba

Health/Medical insurance : the intern is required to hold a valid health insurance coverage for the duration of the internship assignment.

Employment : There is no expectancy of employment at the end of the internship.
