POSITION SUMMARY:

The Refugee Resettlement Intern assists HIAS New York (HIAS NY) staff with outreach, case management, employment, and other resettlement services for refugees and other eligible migrants served through programs funded by the State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration (PRM), Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), and the State of New York’s Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA).

Note, this position is remote and unpaid but may be pursued for academic credit. We ask that applicants be available for approximately 10 to 15 hours per week, starting in late May 2021 and ending in late August 2021.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Undergoes training with HIAS NY staff.
  • Assists with preparation of pre-case documentation (AORs and RIFs) with U.S. ties to initiate refugee resettlement applications.
  • Supports case managers in the provision of social services, enrollment in public benefits and referral to social service providers in New York City, Suffolk, Westchester and other counties under the Reception and Placement (R&P) and New York State Enhanced Services for Refugees (NYSESRP) and Refugee Social Services Programs (RSSP).
  • Assists with case file preparation, compiling required file documentation and case notes as assigned in IRIS online systems.
  • Researches social services providers and programs to complement HIAS NY services and assist clients with referrals as needed.
  • Provides English-Russian interpretation and document translation for Russian speaking clients.
  • Provides administrative support to HIAS NY staff as needed.
  • Brings commitment and integrity to accomplishing HIAS’ mission and goals in all assigned duties, in addition to professional dedication to the implementation of all HIAS’ Core values.
  • Performs other duties and projects as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree.
  • Professional proficiency in Russian required.
  • Excellent technical, organizational and communication skills.
  • Strong commitment to serve vulnerable individuals.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations.
