About the role

We are looking for a Project Geologist to join the Rio Tinto Exploration (RTX) Angolan dynamic team and be part of our exciting new exploration projects in Angola with a well-resourced exploration group with proven track record of discovery.

This challenging role offers the opportunity to discover or acquire resources that create significant value opportunities for Rio Tinto.

Reporting to the Project Manager, you will:

  • Provide technical support to the project manager.
  • Provide technical advice and relating to a particular discipline (e.g. geology, geophysics or geochemistry).
  • Undertake planning, execution and management responsibility within the project team environment.
  • Collection and interpretation of exploration datasets such as rock or soil sample collection, core logging, petro-geophysics and sample analysis.
  • Quality Assurance and Quality Control of exploration datasets.
  • Advance projects with economic potential across all stages of the project lifecycle as safely and efficiently as possible.
  • Implement Rio Tinto policies on safety, environment, community relations and business integrity within the areas of project responsibility.

About you

To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • A passionate desire to participate in discovery.
  • Tertiary degree in geoscience (with honours);
  • Sound technical competence within a relevant discipline (e.g. geology, geophysics, geochemistry) and ability to apply relevant concepts and principles to solve technical problems.
  • Knowledge of mineral deposits and exploration techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to guide and coach project staff and manage contractors.
  • Sound communication and advisory skills including the ability to prepare and present project recommendations and reports to management. Fluency in English will be advantageous.
  • Ability to work productively with a wide range of people in a cross cultural, multi-language and multidisciplinary environment.
  • Previous experience in working on kimberlite exploration and evaluation projects will be advantageous.
  • Digital literacy and the ability to analyse numerical and graphical data such MS Office, ArcGIS products, Geosoft Target, Leapfrog and Databases e.g. acQuire.
