AWF is seeking a dynamic and high performing individual to fill the position of Sustainable Agriculture and Forestry Manager to accelerate AWF’s engagement with the agri-business and forestry sector partners and consolidate our programming across multiple countries and geographies on the continent. Based in Yaounde, Cameroon and working with AWF teams in Kenya, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Tanzania, DRC, Niger and Ethiopia, the Sustainable Agriculture and Forestry Manager will provide sectoral leadership in the implementation of AWF’s Business Engagement Strategy within the context of AWF’s organizational goal of promoting African leaders who drive shifts in policy, planning and finance which leverage wildlife and wildlands as essential to development. This position will support AWF’s engagements with the agri-business and forestry community including particularly agri-businesses and forestry companies investing in landscapes of importance to wildlife with the aim of supporting companies to transition to sustainable practices that are consistent with biodiversity priorities of a given site as well as global norms and standards.

The Sustainable Agriculture and Forestry Manager will support AWF country and landscape level teams to successfully partner with agri-businesses and forestry companies in service of country and landscape strategies and in collaboration with Global Leadership Team leads in the US, Switzerland, Nairobi (Policy, Youth & China). The Sustainable Agriculture and Forestry Manager will support and contribute to strategies to cultivate relationships with strategic partners working on food systems, sustainable agriculture, and sustainable forestry; and will support the country directors and GLT to mobilize partnerships with agri-businesses and forestry companies that benefit biodiversity. To succeed, the role will have to work closely with all the country and landscape teams, policy team, and business partners drawing on their expertise in forging national and regional relationships that lead to the desired change.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Thought Leadership

Work with country team to identify opportunities for agri-business and/or forestry partnerships that deliver on landscape and biodiversity strategies.
Work with investment partners, corporate engagement and proposal design teams to identify potential to leverage the investment pipeline into business solutions that contribute to biodiversity outcomes.
Identify and engage / build capacity of landscape/country focal points for agri-business and/or forestry engagement as relevant to the country and landscape strategies.
Identify, prioritize, and connect with partner organisations in the food sector including those engaged in value-chain certifications, smallholder agriculture support, and global sustainability standards setting processes.
Identify, prioritize and connect with partner organisations in the forestry sector including those engaged in sustainable forestry principles and practices relevant to AWF landscapes and country strategies.
Brief senior management on partner priorities and facilitate decision making process to agree strategic partners.
Negotiate partnership agreements.
Initiate and facilitate joint fundraising for collaborative work with business partners.
Facilitate landscape team processes to negotiate PES agreements as relevant.
Track trends influencing investments into biodiversity businesses including, for example, the role of Nature Based Solutions.
Linking business engagement and partnership into wildlife economy/bioeconomy mapping in Zimbabwe and Rwanda.

Strategy Support for Landscapes and Countries

Participate in landscape and country strategy processes to incorporate business components into AWF strategies.
Collaborate with country and landscape teams on the implementation of strategies, supporting the design and delivery of interventions that engage business and financial institutions.
Advise on strategic partnerships for countries and landscapes.

Partnership / Relationship Management

Engage partners regularly with the view of keeping them informed of AWF strategies, and keeping them engaged in collaborative work.
Provide support to partners in fundraising, business engagement, and investment pipeline development.
Ensure that partner and AWF communications around partnerships are coordinated and mutually beneficial.
Ensure that AWF policies and standards are incorporated into partnership agreements, monitored, and upheld, particularly relating to AWF’s right-based approach to conservation.
Engage with communications and risk teams to manage crisis situations linked to partnerships.
Regularly update senior management on partner engagement.

Financial and Administration

Collect and share data/information according to AWF’s monitoring and evaluation protocols/systems and key performance indicators.
Ensure budgets are managed effectively and resources are used efficiently.
Donor reporting is timely and excellent quality.
Ensure AWF procedures are followed (e.g. procurement, finance, human resource management)

Requirements

Master’s degree in Economics, Business Administration, with emphasis on strategic management, Conservation Economics, Finance, or other relevant education.
At least 8 years of work experience in a strategy position within a fast-paced and dynamic business environment in relation to specific country and landscape plans; experience working in a conservation environment will be an added advantage.
Excellent understanding of business/organizational operations and procedures in sub-Saharan Africa especially in ecological, environmental, and/or development issues.
Experience in developing and managing corporate/organizational strategy strategies, with direct exposure to top management strategy formulation and decision making.
Ability to think strategically, with creative, pragmatic and participatory approaches.
Demonstrated skills in working across departments within organizations, balancing a wide-ranging set of viewpoints, and building consensus among diverse groups.
Understanding of basic financial principles, budgeting, and cost analysis for organiations.
Fluency in written and spoken English is essential. Fluency in written and spoken French is a very significant advantage.
Ability to lead, including management of team resources (both financial and human), providing guidance and mentorship to junior staff, and ensuring team’s delivery of goals
Excellent communicator with interpersonal skills, flexibility, and cultural sensitivity and ability to engage variety of people in delivering an assignment, gathering and sharing information from others throughout the organization and maintaining strong relationships with country programs and field teams, technical experts, managers and leadership.
Willingness to travel, sometimes to remote locations within Africa.
Commitment to AWF’s mission and understanding of issues faced by AWF in delivering its mission. Familiarity with business in Africa, a distinct asset.
