Wild meat is widely consumed in Cameroon presenting risks of disease transmission from both endemic and emerging zoonotic diseases. At the same time, wild meat makes a very important contribution to diets in Cameroon. There are many actors involved in the Cameroon wild meat food chain starting from the hunters in the forest or savanna, household members who prepare the meat for household consumption, traders who bring the meat to vendors in the markets, the vendors who sell the meat, restaurateurs who prepare and cook the meat, and the consumers who purchase, prepare, and consume the meat. Each actor is potentially exposed to different risks and can engage in behaviors that mitigate or perpetuate risk of spillover of animal borne-diseases to humans.

The objective of this project is to understand the behaviors that expose people to different types of risks along the chain of actors involved in the wild meat food chain from the forest to the plate in Cameroon, and investigate and understand what messaging and communication (Social Behavioural Change (SBC) strategies) might be effective in moving consumers away from risky behaviours that are likely to lead to poor health outcomes. The overall goal is to develop recommendations for activities and policies that mitigate risks of disease transmission along the chain. In order to achieve this goal, the project requires additional support and therefore looking for the services of an SBC technical advisor to assist the project team in the design and implementation of SBC activities in two sites selected by the project around the Dja forest reserve.

Duties and responsibilities

Advise the Project Team on relevant SBC strategies and SBC strategy design, including design and creation of communications material and stakeholder engagement. Help the Project team with recruitment of the ground field team for SCB implementation.

The SBC technical advisor will meet once weekly with the project team (can meet remotely); S/he will advise on recruitment for on the ground field team, liaise between project staff and relevant health stakeholders in Cameroon, advise on design and development of the SCB strategy in collaboration with the Project Team, provide input and feedback on SBC plan and implementation, provide input and feedback on communications materials, and help to ensure that project is well situated in Cameroon One Health and Zoonoses strategies.

Education, knowledge and experience

  • MSC or equivalent and knowledge and experience in social and behavioral change work.
  • knowledge of health networks in Cameroon, familiarity with relevant stakeholders for zoonotic disease risk reduction, and experience in project design and management
  • Fluent in both French and English.

Terms and conditions

  • This is a consultancy position.
  • The consultancy is for one day per week for a period of 6 months from February to July 2023.
  • Work location: Negotiable, preferably candidate who can work from any location in Cameroon.
