POSITION SUMMARY:

HIAS seeks an International Communications Manager to help promote HIAS’ thought leadership, programs, policy priorities and advocacy objectives internationally to create a world in which refugees find welcome, safety and opportunity. Reporting to the Senior Director, Global Brand Strategy & Engagement, the International Communications Manager will play a critical role in advancing country-level and regional communications, including in relation to emergencies and humanitarian response, to build support, advance policies and improve services and outcomes for forcibly displaced people.

HIAS’ global strategy relies on our high-impact services and well-established partnerships with donors and partners, including governments, UN agencies and NGOs, and local and refugee communities. It capitalizes on our expertise providing operational support and programming in four areas, including Legal Protection, Gender-Based Violence Prevention & Response, Community-Based Mental Health & Psychosocial Support and Economic Inclusion. Communications play a central role in improving outcomes for forcibly displaced populations.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Supports the design and implementation of HIAS country office (CO) communications strategies and campaigns.
  • Supports COs to reach beneficiaries, partners and donors, in coordination with HQ and regional communications staff, through development of communications materials, including fact sheets, newsletters, blog posts, talking points, marketing and campaigns.
  • Builds CO capacity on branding and messaging, and builds visibility nationally and regionally through social media and press outreach, including during emergencies.
  • During emergency activation, as needed, serves as part of the team deployed to collect photos, videos and stories to reach the wider humanitarian community, including donors.
  • Develops timely reports, briefing notes and fact sheets for external audiences, including donors, related to emergency deployments and HIAS capabilities.
  • Coordinates jointly developed communications products with partners.
  • Co-leads Communications Communities of Practice, convening HIAS’ international social media and communications staff.
  • Supports communications in relation to donor-funded projects to meet set objectives.
  • Supports digital media archives.
  • Stays up-to-date on HIAS policies and guidelines related to the position.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant area required.
  • 4-6 years of experience in communications in refugee, humanitarian, human rights or related organization.
  • Proven track record in implementing strategies and plans in the communications field.
  • Experience in branding, messaging, social media and engagement; previous leadership in at least one of these areas preferred.
  • Strong communications skills (both oral and written) and analytical skills (e.g., news-writing, headline-writing, social media content, drafting and editing skills).
  • Experience with international humanitarian or development programs, with experience serving on emergency deployments preferred.
  • Knowledge of how to present information to different audiences, including from general public to media to high-level decision-makers; storytelling experience preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage time well and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Ability to work well independently and with a team.
  • Excellent computer skills (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook essential; Adobe and Canva preferred).
  • Excellent project management, planning and conceptualization skills; ability to set goals, assess risks, measure impact and supervise program implementation.
  • English fluency required; Spanish fluency or fluency in another of the languages spoken in HIAS’ domestic and international programs preferred.
  • Creative problem-solver and self-starter, with commitment to professional excellence.
  • Familiarity with refugee and resettlement issues and commitment to HIAS’ mission.
  • Experience in the NGO sector preferred.

 

EXTERNAL REPRESENTATION:

All employees are expected to represent the organization in alignment with HIAS’ mission, vision and values. Some employees of HIAS are expected to speak externally on behalf of the organization with clients, donors, affiliates, partners, etc. as part of their work-related responsibilities.
