POSITION SUMMARY:

HIAS seeks an excellent writer, editor and project manager to support the implementation of our Policy Center’s publications portfolio. An integral member of HIAS’ Policy Center, the Editorial Manager is responsible for performing various writing, editing, research and project management functions in support of the Policy Center’s mission and goals. In addition to editing, drafting or collaborating in the drafting of written products, this position will support various staff members across HIAS as well as external partners in the production and release of publications. The Editorial Manager will perform day-to-day management of various projects, serve as copyeditor for a broad range of publications and ensure style consistency across our written products.

Note, this position is based at our headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland or our office in New York, New York, and we will consider a remote option for applicants who live outside of commuting distance to either of our offices and are based in other states in which we are registered (Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Supports and/or collaborates with other staff or external partners in the drafting of a range of publications, including fact sheets, policy briefs, reports, blog posts and op-eds.
  • Adapts academic articles or other lengthy research products into reports, fact sheets or other accessible publications.
  • Serves as primary editor for Policy Center publications, to ensure accuracy, consistency, clarity and accessibility.
  • Conducts literature reviews and performs an assortment of research tasks, as needed.
  • Drafts fact sheets, policy briefs and other short publications.
  • Supports HIAS’ external communications by collaborating in the drafting of press releases and other public affairs materials.
  • Supports the Senior Director, Policy Center on grant proposal and grant report writing.
  • Works closely with the Senior Director, Policy Center in the implementation of the Policy Center’s research and policy analysis agenda.
  • Plans, manages and executes the day-to-day operations of the Policy Center, including publication production, editing and release.
  • Prepares work plans, specifying goals, tasks, resources and timelines.
  • Ensures that projects are completed within allotted timelines and budgets.
  • Plans, manages and executes meetings and events.
  • Oversees consultants, contractors and interns, as needed.
  • Performs support activities, such as website content development and planning.
  • Prepares presentations and talking points for internal and external audiences.
  • Serves as Policy Center representative in designated cross-team initiatives.
  • Attends meetings, hearings and briefings.
  • Communicates with outside authors and consultants.
  • Plans Policy Center-hosted convenings or workshops.
  • Coordinates the development of agendas and note-taking needs for relevant meetings.
  • Fulfills other responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Undergraduate degree required; graduate degree in a social science discipline preferred.
  • 4-6 years of relevant experience required.
  • English fluency required; Spanish fluency preferred.
  • Background in or demonstrated understanding of migration and refugee policy issues.
  • Experience using academic research databases (e.g., Academic Search Premier, JStor, LexisNexis, Google Scholar, etc.).
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Proven project management experience.
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
