Reports to: Adult Education Coordinator

Term: September 1st 2021 –December 31st 2021

Hours:15-hours/week

Background:

The IRC leads the way from harm to home.The IRC New Jersey Regional office’s Education& Learning department aims to meet the educational needs of adult refugee, asylee, and immigrant populations in New Jersey. We offer a variety of classes and services, including English language instruction, Cultural Orientation, College and Career Readiness, and referrals to external educational opportunities. Together, these form a comprehensive multi-faceted program designed to meet the immediate and ongoing education needs of our diverse group of clients.

Scope of work:

Intern will assist the program Coordinator in supporting diverse client short-and long-term goals.

Responsibilities:

  • Enroll adult students and in appropriate classes around NJ ;
  • Keep track of client communication and follow-up on attendance ;
  • Maintain timely databases on the different tracking systems ;
  • Be an advocate for clients’ educational needs with external education service providers ;
  • Attend weekly supervision meetings with the program Coordinator.

Learning objectives:

The Adult Education Intern will:

  1. Get hands-on experience working with refugee populations soon after they arrive in the US ;
  2. Learn about the refugee resettlement process in NJ ;
  3. Build communication and outreach skills with different stakeholders.

Profil

Requirements:

  • Comfort working with refugees and immigrants from a variety of backgrounds, including those with limited formal education and/or literacy skills ;
  • Ability to adapt to changing situations, comfortable working in a fast-paced, demanding environment ;
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team ;
  • Proficient in MS Office suite(especially Excel) ;
  • Responsible, flexible, and dedicated ;
  • Reliable: will commit to term and hours listed above ;
  • Must be able to pass a background check ;
  • Experience teaching Adults or English language learners a plus ;
  • Bilingual speaking abilities highly desirable(Spanish, French, Arabic, Swahili, Pashto, Dari, or Farsi).
