Job Description

Overview

The RTI University Collaboration Office seeks a prospect for the Research Internship within the Discovery Sciences unit.

This internship is a contract position. The employment contract is administered by Greene Resources Powered by Array, RTI’s supplemental staffing partner.

The NCCU-RTI Center for Applied Research in Environmental Sciences (CARES) leverages the strengths of the two institutions to establish research collaborations and laboratory training in environmental exposure assessment, cell-based toxicology, image analysis and other research tools with a unique focus on health disparities and environmental justice.

Per- and Polyfluoralkyl substances (PFAS) are known as forever chemicals that have gained widespread media and public attention. These chemicals are known to have impacts on human health including the increased risk of cancer. PFAS are widely used in products including food wrappers, furniture, cooking pans, firefighting foams, etc. Due to their persistence, these compounds have been detected in drinking water and are predicted to be in the blood of nearly all Americans. In this internship, we will investigate PFAS contamination in North Carolina and the impact of PFAS mixtures on human cells to better understand their toxicity.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participate in cutting edge research focused on improving human health and the environment;
  • Laboratory research skills that are translatable to any job within STEM;
  • Opportunities to present and write up scientific findings;
  • Professional development workshops and learning opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting research using various cell-based assays;
  • Reading scientific literature;
  • Drafting literature reviews and manuscripts;

RTI’s Internship Program emphasizes experiential and mentored learning experiences, providing students and recent degree recipients an opportunity to apply their academic knowledge and skills in a meaningful and practical way. We are committed to developing the future workforce by encouraging interns to explore various career paths in a nonprofit research institute setting that values diversity and inclusion.
