About the Position

The Nusatupe Innovation hub manager will lead the transformation of the Nusatupe research station to become an Innovation hub. The hub will have several components aiming to demonstrate a nourishing, sustainable and climate resilient island food system. The activities at the hub will deliver technical training in partnership with Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR), Solomon Islands National University (SINU), Kastom Gaden Association (KGA), Rural Training Centres (RTCs), as well as other partners. Demonstrations and trainings will include traditional agriculture, community-based resource management, fish-handling, environmental restoration, integrated food aquaponics, novel technologies, and a Marine research lab. While the post-holder is not expected to be an expert in all these fields, a thorough understanding and technical experiences with some of these areas is crucial.

The post holder will ensure the smooth running of the Innovation hub at Nusatupe station and engage with a range of stakeholders and partners to develop further Innovation hub ideas. The position fills a central role in the One CGIAR Initiative on Resilient Aquatic Food Systems (RAqFS), where the position will facilitate the integration between the goals of WP2 (Aqua+Partners – Partnering to realize the benefits of aquatic foods in sustainable development) and WP5 (AquaLabs – National innovation platforms for aquatic food systems). This is a growing area of WorldFish’s work in Solomon Islands where we are seeking to integrate aquatic foods with partnerships that span sectors of society and government and to use the innovation hub platform to support the goals of MFMR, WorldFish’s national host. These goals are outlined in the WorldFish 2023 Operational Plan “Nourishing island food systems in Solomon Islands”. The position is focused on island food systems in Solomon Islands, as well as Timor-Leste. Some participation in WorldFish’s international research program across different fisheries, landscapes and food systems in Timor-Leste is therefore possible.

  • Aligned with the goals of the Innovation hub components, support the curriculum development and efforts to secure long term funding for “ocean literacy” with MFMR and SINU as the key national knowledge creator and educator.
  • Strengthening WorldFish’s program on island food systems together with national partners and the One CGIAR initiative on RAqFS with colleagues and partners in Timor-Leste.
