Background

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), under its research project “Gender-Sensitive Agricultural Index Based Insurance (GAIINS)”, is recruiting a survey firm to collect data for a study on gendered barriers in index insurance provision and uptake. The firm will survey 1,000 farmers across 5 counties in Kenya to quantify climate risk exposure among men and women of different social categories, men’s and women’s knowledge of existing index insurance products, their use of these services, the barriers they face in accessing and realizing the full benefits from available products, and to analyze what types of innovations can make index insurance more attractive to both men and women.

Scope of work

  • Contribute to the final survey and questionnaire design.
  • Provide input in the process for obtaining IRB approvals.
  • Translate consent forms and survey tools into Kiswahili.
  • Train enumerators and pilot survey instruments.
  • Collect data from 1,000 households in 5 counties.
  • Randomize at household level whether the respondent is male or female.

Required qualifications of the consultant / survey team leader

  • Excellent track record in overseeing surveys for collecting high-quality data across Eastern Africa, especially in Kenya.
  • Demonstrated capacity in the financial management of and accounting around large-scale household surveys.
  • Expert knowledge of SurveyCTO and related software for administering surveys using computer-assisted personal interviewing methods.
  • Experience in building trust and good relations with implementing partners and other project stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills of the research associate and the research manager that will be involved in managing the survey.

Preferred qualifications

  • Having infrastructure on the ground in Kenya to implement a survey, including an office in Nairobi, Kenya.
  • Demonstrated experience with surveys around the subject of agricultural economics, gender, and agricultural risk management.
