1.Background

Gold Star Kenya (GS Kenya) was established in 2010 as a local Non-Governmental Organization; GS Kenya was born out of the success of the Gold Star Network, a social franchise program initiative established in 2006 to promote comprehensive quality HIV care amongst a network of private health providers in Kenya. GS Kenya implements health-related projects in Kenya; providing HIV care and treatment and family planning/reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, adolescent health (FP/RMNCAH), nutrition, and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services.

2. Objectives

The consultant will be responsible for researching, identifying and applying for grants that align with the goals and objectives of the organization.

3. Scope of Work

The scope of work for the Consultant will include but not be limited to:

  • Study and understand the history, structure, objectives, programs and financial needs of the organization in respective program areas.
  • Research grant opportunities from government and non-government agencies.
  • Draft grant proposals and supporting documents based on the funding requirements of the organization.
  • Coordinate submission of proposals to grant coordinators for approval.
  • Respond to internal and external queries on drafted and submitted proposals.
  • Maintain positive relationships with fund providers and other stakeholders.
  • Maintain records and submit reports related to grant opportunities.
  • Use relationships and collaborations with key stakeholders to improve grants.
  • Displaying adherence to the organization’s mission.
  • Maintaining proficient knowledge of the organization’s history and programs to improve subsequent applications.
  • Identifying additional grant funding opportunities.
  • Writing grant proposals.
  • Furnishing prospective funders with supporting documents.
  • Collaborating with Executive Director and Technical Director to send funders any necessary additional information and clarification.
  • Maintaining records in hard copies and computer databases.

4. Institutional Arrangements

The Consultant will report directly to Executive Director of the GSK. GSK will provide relevant background documents necessary for the assignment including, the GSK quarterly reports, the M&E framework and the preliminary. The TA shall be responsible for the coordination of meetings and other activities under the Consultancy.

5.Expertise

a) Skills and Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in creative writing or related field.
  • Demonstrated grant writing experience resulting in major grant awards, with preference given to experience with international funding and/or WASH, RMNCAH, HIV/AIDS/TB , Climate change, Nutrition sector funding.
  • Experience collaborating with several multi-lateral and bilateral donors, international health partners, and Government and civil society representatives
  • Demonstrated proficiency and experience in costing Strategies and/or Plans (national, sub-national, sectoral and for specific vulnerable or at-risk populations)
  • Strong team player with a proven track record of organizational skills, detailed-oriented, and willingness to take initiative.
  • 2+ years of grant writing experience.
  • Proficient with measuring and reaching income goals.
  • Proficient with MS Office Word and Excel.
  • Excellent knowledge of fundraising information sources
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

b) Program specific requirements

WaSH

  • Substantial experience, and track record or success, in development of funding proposals for WaSH programs
  • Sound technical grasp of the concept and context for WaSH programming.
  • Proven ability in analysis and synthesis of WaSH-related data, including epidemiological, financial, and programmatic components; including experience in program evaluation, strategic and/or operational planning, and health & community systems.
  • Knowledge of the healthcare system of Kenya or ability to quickly acquire such knowledge is desirable.
  • Exposure to cross-cultural determinants of WaSH interventions uptake

Climate Change

  • Substantial experience, and track record or success, in the development of funding proposals for climate change programs
  • Sound technical grasp of the concept and context for climate change programming.
  • Proven ability in analyzing and synthesizing climate change-related data, including epidemiological, financial, and programmatic components, and experience in program evaluation and strategic and/or operational planning.
  • Demonstrated experience in participating in the development of climate-gender-sensitive proposals, concept notes or funding requests.
  • Knowledge of Kenya’s climate change program systems or ability to quickly acquire such knowledge is desirable.

RMNCAH

  • Substantial experience, and track record or success, in the development of funding proposals for RMNCAH programs
  • Sound technical grasp of the concept and context for joint RMNCAH programming.
  • Proven ability in analysis and synthesis of RMNCAH-related data, including epidemiological, financial, and programmatic components; including experience in program evaluation, strategic and/or operational planning, and health & community systems.
  • Knowledge of the healthcare system of Kenya or ability to quickly acquire such knowledge is desirable.

HIV/AIDS/TB

  • Substantial experience, and track record of success, in the development of funding proposals for HIV/AIDS, TB and health programs;
  • Sound technical grasp of the concept and context for joint TB/HIV programming;
  • Proven ability in analysis and synthesis of HIV and TB -related data, including epidemiological, financial, and programmatic components; including experience in program evaluation, strategic and/or operational planning, and health & community systems;
  • Knowledge of the healthcare system of Kenya or ability to quickly acquire such knowledge is desirable.
