In Sokoto, one consultant will be required to train six general hospitals.

Practitioners to be trained may include doctors/pediatricians, nurses, midwives, and nurse anesthetists. Consultants will be overseen by a lead Pediatric Medical Consultant and a technical monitor from IHP. Medical training consultants will also provide follow-up mentoring and supervision of the secondary care in collaboration with the Hospital Management Board and staff.

Consultants may only apply to one training opportunity per state as the training will be rolled out simultaneously in all three states.

Training Requirements:

Each consultant (two per state) will train 5 secondary hospitals (for a total of 10 hospitals trained in Bauchi and Kebbi, with 11 hospitals trained in Sokoto State).

When equipment and supplies are available, trainers will provide training in using oxygen equipment and nutrition commodities. When these supplies/equipment are not available, simplified training must be provided to refresh healthcare workers to provide optimal care using available equipment (or prompt referral to tertiary care if needed/appropriate).

Estimated length of trainings at each general hospital:

  • Severe malnutrition (~ 6 days) ;
  • Severe Respiratory illness (with oxygen therapy support) (~3 days) ;
  • Severe malaria (~ 2 days).

Needs Assessment/Criteria for Hospital Inclusion:

Hospitals with the largest volume of cases and staff will be prioritized, along with hospitals that have oxygen equipment and nutrition commodities to treat severe malnutrition. If another implementer has given similar trainings in a facility, another general hospital will be prioritized for refresher training.
