The position is to be filled as soon as possible, with an initial contract duration of one year. There are good prospects for an extension. Employment location will be Kenema, Sierra Leone, with frequent travel to the project locations in the country.

Since December 2020, Welthungerhilfe (WHH) has been implementing waste management projects in Koidu, Bo, Kenema and Makeni to improve integrated waste management and recycling at district and national level. In addition to providing technical assistance in the area of waste recycling, the project aims to support the coordination of waste management at the level of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development. As Sector Advisor – Waste Management, you will be responsible for the coordination, planning and operational implementation of the project. In coordination with the Head of Project, you will ensure an appropriate use of funds/resources, as well as technical reporting. Your technical input will especially be required when developing new project proposals for submission to donors.

Your responsibilities

  • Support the Head of Project in carrying out the project planning, implementation, monitoring and the project’s financial control
  • Report to the Head of Project on the progress of the project(s)
  • Participatively develop waste management policies with the goal of reducing, collecting, reusing, recycling, and safely disposing of waste
  • Contribute to regular coordination meetings with the respective city councils mentioned above
  • Provide technical advice to private sector businesses on waste recycling for scaling up in the respective secondary towns
  • Strengthen policy enforcement through participatory development of relevant waste management rules and regulations in cooperation with relevant ministries, especially the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development
  • Provide technical advice on the existing solid waste management chain in Bo, Kenema, Koidu and Makeni towns
  • Represent WHH in relevant forums/clusters at state and national levels and within the humanitarian community
  • In collaboration with the Head of Programme, support the Programme Unit in conceptualising and developing new project proposals for submission to donors

Your profile

  • A university or college degree in environmental engineering or equivalent qualification commensurate with this position
  • At least 3 years of project management experience in carrying out transitional/development projects
  • A minimum of 3 years of professional experience in the area of waste management
  • Professional experience in technical and financial advisory at secondary town level
  • BMZ donor experience would be an advantage
  • Broad knowledge of solid waste management chain, with emphasis on recycling and composting
  • Expertise in circular economy and environmental sustainability
  • Coordination and organisational skills – even under a high workload
  • Willingness to frequently travel to WHH’s project areas
  • Readiness to receive necessary vaccinations for working in WHH’s programme countries
  • Excellent spoken and written English language skills
