The position is to be filled as soon as possible, with an initial contract duration of 6 months, with possible prospects for an extension. Employment location will be Juba, South Sudan, with frequent travel to the project locations in the country.

As Nutrition Expert you will be a key member of Welthungerhilfe (WHH) South Sudan Program Country Team (PCT) along with the MEAL Manager, Grants Reporting Manager (GRM), Partnership Expert, WASH Expert, Gender and Protection Mainstreaming Expert (GPME), under the leadership of the Head of Program Development, Quality and Strategy (HoPDQS) and in coordination with the Head of Program Implementation (HoPI). In your role, you will provide technical expertise to programming in Nutrition for the stand-alone Nutrition Program as well as integration of Nutrition sensitive Programming throughout all sectors in WHH’s project areas in South Sudan. You will develop the Nutrition Program strategy, take part in defining the country programs strategy and contribute to constantly increase the competitiveness, integration and quality of programs proposed and implemented by WHH in South Sudan.

Your responsibilities

  • Develop and roll-out the Nutrition strategy for WHH in South Sudan ensuring integrated approaches with other sectors in line with WHH South Sudan country strategy and global strategy;
  • Develop innovative technical Nutrition solutions in line with WHH’s country strategy, with a particular focus on Nutrition-sensitive food systems and WASH interventions;
  • Provide strategic and technical guidance to Nutrition program design and implementation ensuring high quality of implementation adopting best practices from multiple countries;
  • Provide leadership in cooperation and collaboration with National and sub-national Nutrition stakeholders (INGOs, LNGOs, Clusters, relevant Ministries);
  • Lead the development and roll out of guidelines, training manuals for nutrition in local food systems;
  • Follow up and ensure the achievement of agreed short- and medium-term priorities of the country strategy on nutrition;
  • Contribute to identify trends, donor priorities and partnership opportunities;
  • Actively contribute to the development of innovative proposals and ensure technical correctness in reporting;
  • Actively represent WHH in meetings, clusters, technical working groups, and coordination forums to promote WHH’s nutritional approaches and niche;
  • Contribute to the development of WHH South Sudan fundraising plan and strategy;
  • Provide technical advice and guidance to the Heads of Projects and Project teams on workable contextualized measures in preventive and curative Nutrition approaches;
  • In collaboration with the MEAL Manager, develop or contextualize tools for monitoring, needs assessments, structured learning, and evaluations;
  • Contribute to the emergency preparedness and response plan and process to enable quick and appropriate response to disasters.

Your profile

  • Post-graduate/master’s degree in Public health, Medicine, Nutrition or relevant area of expertise; a bachelor’s degree with vast field experience in Nutrition Programming is acceptable in lieu of a master’s degree;
  • A minimum of 5 years of living and working experience in nutrition in humanitarian contexts in Africa, of which at least 3 years have been in managerial/coordination positions with NGO(s);
  • Demonstrated record of accomplishment of successful engagement with institutional donors (EU, UN, FCDO, BHA, ECHO, GFFO etc.);
  • Demonstrated experience in a large-scale program management in the field of nutrition programming in humanitarian, early recovery and development settings, incl. at least one year in South Sudan or similar context;
  • Excellent understanding of the humanitarian architecture (NGO, INGO Forums, UN/Clusters, main donors);
  • Commitment to frequent travels to Project locations;
  • Ability to work respectfully with multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary teams keeping a positive work environment;
  • Strong interpersonal verbal and written communication skills and ability to facilitate collaboration;
  • Solution orientation; excellent organizational, planning and communication skills;
  • Readiness to receive necessary vaccinations for working in Welthungerhilfe’s project countries;
  • Advanced proficiency in written and spoken English.
