Background

UNICEF is an inter-governmental agency mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to advocate for the protection of children’s rights and to support governments in realizing their rights. UNICEF works with partners from both the private and public sector in more than 190 countries and territories through country programmes or national committees.

The Education Section of UNICEF, Sri Lanka works in partnership with the Government and engages in activities, inter alia with the Ministry of Education, National Institute of Education, Ministry of Women and Child Affairs and the Provincial Departments of Education. UNICEF’s work in education covers both preschool and general education with a movement towards bridging the school-to-work transition as well. In the preschool sector, UNICEF is working with government and private partners towards a system that supports and assures quality preschool education for all children in Sri Lanka underpinned by the Early Childhood Development Standards (ECDS). In general education, UNICEF is working with the government and other partners to instate policies and plans that focus on equity, inclusiveness, and child-centeredness. In particular, UNICEF provides assistance to the ongoing education reforms, both at the national and sub-national level, focusing on the areas of the curriculum and teacher education forms. UNICEF also works to promote social cohesion through education and is currently supporting the efforts of continuing education during the economic crisis.

UNICEF further provides analytical work, technical assistance and coordination support to ensure that policies and plans are based on a solid assessment of the education sector. In the new country programme (2023-2027) the education team is increasing the depth of its ongoing programmes with targeted focus on national level initiatives and system-strengthening interventions whilst maintaining and also increasing provincial-level engagements.
