Learning areas

The International Labour Organization’s Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP) is based in Bangkok, Thailand and supports work in 36 member countries, from Afghanistan to the Pacific Islands. Areas of action include increasing productive and decent employment opportunities, providing adequate social protection, and responding to crises. Other relief and development issues include human trafficking, bonded labour and child labour, the growth of the informal economy, labour migration, poverty alleviation, safety and health, skills and employability and youth employment. ROAP has a Regional Communications Unit (RCOMM), which works to enhance understanding and awareness of the work of ILO in the Asia and the Pacific region. RCOMM carries out communications activities at the regional level and also supports ILO communications officers based in countries around the region.
As an intern in the Regional Communications Unit of the International Labour Organization’s Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific you will be actively involved in a wide range of communications actions and activities aimed at creating awareness and understanding of ILO’s work in the region. This will include the development and production of a variety of content, liaison with projects and ILO country offices, support to organization of events etc.

Required profile

Under the direct supervision of Communication Officer, the Communications Intern will undertake the following tasks which include, but are not limited to:

•    Develop content such as short articles, interviews, infographics etc
•    Develop content for social media such as graphic cards, posts, slideshows etc
•    Rewrite and edit written outputs such as feature articles, press releases etc
•    Proofread articles and material as necessary
•    Support the management of the ROAP social media channels (Twitter and LinkedIn)
•    Monitor metrics or ILO ROAP’s social media channels
•    Support production of audio-visual material such as video interviews, podcasts etc
•    Liaise with ILO Country Offices and projects regarding production of specific items (e.g. articles, brochures etc).
•    Support the organisation of events and/or workshops
•    Provide support to other assignments as required relating to the project’s routine such as event set up, media requests etc.

Education

Candidates must be enrolled in the final year of a postgraduate degree programme, such as a master’s programme or equivalent or in a higher degree programme or have completed such programme in the year preceding the application. Areas of study may include mass communications, media relations, journalism, international relations, gender studies or international development.  However other areas of study are acceptable should the candidate display a demonstrable interest in the communications field.

Experience

Relevant experience and knowledge carrying out communications actions would be an advantage for example developing written or audio-visual content, social media content production and marketing, event organisation. Infographic production or data visualisation experience/ability would be an advantage. Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite products (Photoshop, Illustrator etc) an advantage. Knowledge and experience of labour issues, working with an international organization or civil society organisation or of the Asia and the Pacific region is an asset.

Languages

Excellent command of spoken and written English (near native) is essential.  Command of other languages from Asia and the Pacific region is beneficial.

•    Understanding of social media monitoring metrics and tools;
•    Ability to produce and or edit simple audio-visual communications materials ;
•    Ability to deliver quality outputs with a minimum of supervision and to a high standard;
•    Willingness to acquire new knowledge;
•    Ability to work in a multicultural and multilingual environment;
•    Attention to detail.

Period:  Availability to start in July/August 2023 for a period of six months.
