The Media Department and the Berlin Office of Human Rights Watch (HRW) are seeking candidates for the position of Coordinator to support our German language website, social, and multimedia. This is a great opportunity for a creative media professional who is enthusiastic about communicating human rights to both wider and targeted audiences to make our work more effective.

This full-time position will be based in our Berlin office, and reports to the Germany Director, based in Berlin, and the Deputy Director of the Media Department, based in San Francisco.

The successful candidate may have the option to work remotely but is expected to work from the office 2-3 days per week. We aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment and onboarding of this position.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Maintain HRW German language content online to boost HRW’s work and to contribute to important debates in Germany on social media;

2. Maintain and grow the German language presence in social media, especially Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and other platforms;

3. Coordinate translation requests; ensure a smooth workflow with external translators; vet returned translations; translate urgent short documents (invitations, report blurbs, captions);

4. Update, maintain, and curate the HRW website in German, www.hrw.org/de; post new articles to the website when required;

5. Work with the Development and Outreach Department and Public Engagement and Campaigns Division to integrate  the German perspective of campaigns;

6. Maintain and update HRW’s media lists for German language media;

7. Help analyze the German media market and HRW’s presence in the German media (including social media); assist in the creation of daily and monthly coverage reports and quarterly impact analyses;

8. Contribute to other Media initiatives, including supporting our podcast and newsletter programs;

9. Assist with the recruitment and mentoring of interns; and

10. Perform other tasks as may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: A university education, or equivalent working experience, in journalism, social sciences, international relations or relevant studies is required.

Experience:  A minimum of two (2) years of related work experience is required.

Related Skills and Knowledge: 

1. Excellent oral and written communication skills in German and English, including translation experience, is required.

2. A proven track record as a writer and/or editor is required.

3. Ability to run social media accounts and analyze analytics is required.

4. Strong online/Microsoft Office skills is required; experience photo editing is a plus.

5. Ability to express ideas clearly and logically is required. Ability to recognize editorial opportunities is highly preferred.

6. Highly organized with the ability and self-motivation to work in a fast-paced environment both independently and as a member of a team is required.

7. Flexibility in responding quickly to events as they occur and producing excellent written material under tight deadlines is required.

8. Experience working on a Content Management System (CMS), Drupal preferred, or publishing to a website a plus.

9. Experience with a wire service, newspaper, or online journalism site or other news organization is desirable.

10. A broad range of knowledge about human rights and international affairs is desirable.
