Job Description

Participate in the analysis of the oil market on short term and long-term horizons to support the activities of Trading & Shipping. Monitor the supply and flows of crude and other products on the world market through databases and forecasting models by country. Carry out premium valuations of different crude qualities based on Assays using software for optimizing theoretical refining margins. Carry out ad hoc or regular analysis, studies and reports. Participate in the exchange of information with traders, EP, RC or MS teams as well as with external organizations (consultants or agencies).

Within the framework of the missions mentioned above, the incumbent must:
• Systematically collect information about market developments and validate them
• Sort information quickly to discern the emergence of new trends and potential imbalances
• Prepare recurring, ad hoc or thematic studies of the oil market situation
• Make regular presentations to trading teams and TOTSA management
• Contribute to the preparation of weekly or monthly economic reports
• Respond directly to specific questions from traders on market developments

In the context of monitoring the supply and flows of the world oil market, the incumbent must more particularly:
• Coordinate with the other sites in monitoring and improving the bases for monitoring oil production and oil flows region by region
• Maintain a regular dialogue with the consultants who monitor world oil production
• Improve data collection, filtering and storage processes
• Automate part of the data processing
• Maintain a forecast horizon of 12 months
• Mastering the techniques of valuing crude oil premiums

Context and environment

The activity takes place in a real-time process in close collaboration with the rest of the Market Analysis team in Geneva and Houston. Physically based on the trading desk, the analyst has privileged direct contact with traders. In analytical terms, the position is located at the interface between upstream and downstream oil but requires an excellent general knowledge of the international petroleum environment. The work involves rapid manipulation of large flows of data and information (data captures, analysis and modelling, regular production of reports and their electronic distribution). This context requires real mastery of a high-performance IT environment, and requires participation in its development.

Contribute to collecting, interpreting and transmitting in real time to trading teams quantified information on the possible impact of recent and future market developments – information essential for taking positions on the market (facilitating the responsiveness of traders and their risk account). The transmission of information and analysis in a clear and concise format is essential for their proper understanding and for maintaining a constructive dialogue with all of the Group’s branches.

Candidate profile

  • Higher education followed by 8 to 10 years of professional experience in trades related to energy markets, in particular oil markets. Good command of computer languages ​​such as Python, R, MatLab, VB, SQL and PowerBI.
  • Curiosity of mind, creativity & sense of the concrete, intellectual rigor & capacity for synthesis and presentation.
  • Fluency in written and oral expression in English. Proficiency in other languages will be an advantage.
