About the Position

WorldFish, Bangladesh Office is recruited a Scientist (Fisheries Co-management) specifically as part of the project team delivering the USAID-funded `ECOFISH II` project. The key objective of the ECOFISH II project is to improve the resilience of the coastal-marine and Meghna River ecosystems and improve the livelihoods of communities reliant on the coastal fisheries. Under the guidance of the ECOFISH II project’s Chief of Party/ Team Leader and in coordination with Scientist (Fisheries Conservation), the Scientist (Fisheries Co-management) will be responsible for research and development in establishing adaptive co-management system in the small-scale artisanal fisheries that support towards sustainability of the coastal resources and the well-being of the coastal and marine fishing communities in Bangladesh.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design a research program and development activities that address contemporary research questions around adaptive co-management, governance, trade-offs in coastal fisheries resources management, and the efficacy of ecosystem approaches to fisheries co-management.
  • Design and deliver research to inform, evaluate and complement the objectives of the Small-scale fisheries research program, and specifically those of the ECOFISH II project deliverables.
  • Support, through oversight and engagement with the project team, the implementation of efforts that build the capacity of co-management institutions and work in support of partnerships such as with the Department of Fisheries (DoF) and other key stakeholders.
  • Provide high level oversight and research support and evaluation of the development of local level capacity on preparing for Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) plans integrating with local ecological knowledge (LEK) on biodiversity conservation.
  • Feedback research findings to improve the activities or initiatives that fall under the banner of the Ecosystem approach to fisheries management (e.g., enforcement strategies, compensation initiatives etc.).
  • Through leading and mentoring research teams synthesize learning and best practices from the project and produce quality scientific outputs and other communication materials are shared with the stakeholders.
  • Contribute data, analysis and co-authorship through writing to multi-country evaluations or case study papers as well as for IR1.1 (Improved science outputs for decision-making) that address research questions related to stock assessment and ecosystem health improvements around small-scale fisheries and associated initiatives.
  • Work closely with Scientist (Fisheries Conservation) to integrate science-based decision outputs into the activities of the adaptive co-management model for implementation in the field, with the goal of improving local fisheries management.
  • Any other relevant duties as assigned by the Chief of Party/ Team Leader, ECOFISH II, Country Director, Bangladesh and One CGIAR.

Requirements

This job is open to Bangladeshi Nationals with the following qualifications-

  • A PhD degree in Fisheries Science or Marine Science or Environmental Science or similar discipline with strong knowledge on fisheries management in the light of ecosystem and community wellbeing.
  • At least ten years working in a fisheries and development context where the delivery of high quality research has been integral.
  • Outstanding research track record of international standing, demonstrated by publications in international peer reviewed journals.
  • Solid understanding of development practice, gender and social inclusion, livelihood initiatives and the like, with an ability and knowledge of local or international partners best situated to deliver and ensure high quality delivery of the ‘development’ aspects of research for development.
  • Demonstrated ability to design high quality field research, with appropriate knowledge and engagement with theories and framings such as human well-being, adaptive capacity, sustainable livelihoods approach and ecosystem approach to fisheries management.
  • A demonstrated awareness and commitment to social and gender inclusion in building research teams and designing research.
  • Knowledge on essential computer software/packages like MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint.
  • Excellent communication skills and high proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and able to work in a team-oriented multi-cultural environment.
