Duties

Specific responsibilities will include:

  • working closely with the Euclid Mission Manager, ensuring that the scientific objectives of the missions are achieved and that its overall scientific return is maximised throughout the operations and post-operations phases;
  • investigating and identifying synergies with complementary facilities currently in development, such as the Vera C. Rubin Observatory and the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, to maximise scientific opportunities for the European community;
  • acting as the interface for all scientific matters between the operations teams, the Euclid Science Team, the Euclid Consortium, institutional and international partners and the astronomy community;
  • approving the Euclid observation plan and supervising the Euclid data releases;
  • maximising the usability of the Euclid data releases;
  • preparing and disseminating relevant scientific documentation and reporting to ESA management and the advisory bodies when required;
  • promoting Euclid to the wider scientific community at conferences and by electronic means and supporting broader Directorate/Agency outreach and education activities.

Project Scientists are expected to actively pursue personal scientific research and participate in the Science Faculty.

Technical competencies

Active researcher in a relevant field of space science
Knowledge of the latest developments in research and facilities in the relevant field
Knowledge and experience in scientific space missions and payloads
Experience in coordinating the scientific community and managing multiple interfaces at the international level
Experience in promoting science to the wider scientific community and general public

Education

A PhD in astrophysics is required for this post.

Additional requirements

Desirable assets include a good understanding of the European and worldwide space science context and experience in any of the following:

  • Research related to cosmology and dark matter;
  • Large-scale astronomical surveys;
  • Management of large scientific teams and coordination of the scientific community.
