Objectives of the programme :

The mission of WHO’s Health Emergencies Programme (The Programme) is to build the capacity of Member States to manage public health threats and health emergency risks and, when national capacities are overwhelmed, to lead and coordinate the international response to contain outbreaks and health emergencies and to provide effective relief and recovery to affected populations.

Description of duties :

  1. Participate in the preparation of technical documents, papers and reports as required by influenza team lead and unit manager ;
  2. Propose, coordinate and implement analytical methods/tools and metrics to support the monitoring and evaluation of strategic technical initiatives ;
  3. Contribute to the development of evidence-informed manuals, guidance, tools, norms and standards for prevention and control of high threat pathogens specific to the Region ;
  4. Support the establishment of partnerships to facilitate knowledge sharing, in particular on influenza and other emerging respiratory diseases ;
  5. Identify knowledge gaps and develop plans to address them ;
  6. Participate in the implementation of planned activities and monitoring of work plan progress ;
  7. Monitor and analyze influenza and other emerging respiratory diseases epidemiological data, and prepare regular updates about the regional situation ;
  8. Collaborate with the transfer of knowledge team to develop user-friendly materials for policy briefings related to emerging and epidemic-prone diseases 9. Act as a focal point for WHO collaborating centers under IHP unit and establish strong collaborations with other institutions addressing various aspects of the public health response to outbreaks ;
  9. Support preparations for- and participate in- meetings and trainings related to the influenza and other emerging respiratory diseases, prepare summary notes and follow up on the implementation of delegated actions and initiatives.

Profil :

Education

  • Essential : University degree in public health or health related sciences ;
  • Desirable : Master’s Degree in public health or health related sciences

Experience :

  • Essential : At least two years of experience in public health with specific focus on prevention and control of emerging infectious diseases, research studies and collaboration with partners ;
  • Desirable : Prior experience within the United Nations System and working with the international partners.

Skills :

  1. Professional and ethical behavior with ability to work with tact and discretion. 2) Ability to multi-task and complete jobs, with efficiency and on short notice ;
  2. Excellent planning and organizational skills ;
  3. Mature judgement, strong technical, analytical and conceptual skills ;

Remuneration :

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 47,895 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 1173 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
