ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

  • As part of HIAS’ content team, reports and writes original stories for the HIAS website covering the organization’s work in the LAC region.
  • Assists Senior Director, Content in building up and overseeing a network of freelance writers in the region.
  • Edits stories submitted by freelancers for publication on the HIAS website.
  • Works closely with communications staff in country offices and in the regional office to determine the best way to produce editorial content in the region.
  • Works with country office staff to develop strategy and capacity to expand editorial content in both English and Spanish on country pages on HIAS.org.
  • Maintains awareness of LAC strategies and priorities and works to develop editorial content in support of them.
  • Assists with development of media strategy, supports outreach and writes press releases and statements concerning the LAC region.
  • Works with Visuals Editor to maintain a network of photographers and videographers across the LAC region and to select suitable visual materials for publication.
  • Travels occasionally (1-2 international trips, 2-3 domestic trips) to HIAS locations in the region.
  • Assists Senior Director, Content in maintaining the home page and latest sections of the website, and other related functions.
  • Oversees Communications department management of key projects and initiatives in the region.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Undergraduate degree required; graduate degree preferred.
  • 4-6 years of experience as writer and/or editor at a news organization, magazine or non-profit institution.
  • Fluency in both English and Spanish required.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Experience with media relations preferred.
  • Experience working in sensitive and fast-moving news and communications contexts.
  • Sound news judgment and awareness of regional and global news cycle.
  • Interest in and passion for HIAS’ mission.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks at once in a fast-paced organization.
  • Ability to oversee projects with multiple stakeholders and tight deadlines.
  • Expertise in or experience with covering refugee issues preferred.
