JOB PURPOSE

The purpose of this role is to support the Legal & Governance team in providing advice and support on regulatory and other legal compliance matters affecting the global operations of the International Secretariat of Amnesty International (‘IS’). The role holder will be one of three qualified lawyers in the team with trainee support in the team.

ABOUT YOU

As a qualified solicitor or barrister in English law, you will have experience in carrying out investigations into data breaches, whistleblowing, fraud and other regulatory matters, preferably in an international organisation. You will understand the need for confidentiality when dealing with sensitive information and correspondence, as well as having excellent written and verbal communication skills in English for both internal and external audiences.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Carrying out investigations into data breaches, whistleblowing, fraud and other regulatory matters, working with more senior members of the team and/or external counsel as necessary depending on the complexity of the investigation.
  • Carrying out the more complex data protection impact assessments.
  • Managing the Legal & Governance policy database including updating key policies on whistleblowing, anti-fraud, bribery & corruption, anti-terrorism vetting & compliance to ensure accurate and user-friendly language and supporting the IT team with updates to key data protection and information governance policies.
  • Reporting material incidents to regulators (eg. Information Commissioners Office, Charity Commission), the Coalition Leadership Team and/or the Board as appropriate.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Qualified solicitor or barrister (English law) with at least 1 year of Post Qualification Experience in a law firm and/or in house.
  • Experience advising clients on data protection legislation in the UK or EU essential.
  • Experience managing investigations such as data breach incidents, whistleblowing and/or fraud (including use of electronic discovery tools).
  • Fluent English, written and spoken essential; additional language skills desirable.
