Objectives   :

The WCARO PME section is seeking 1 experienced French writer/editor/translator (English-French and French-English) to be available at short notice to assist with the writing and editing of documents in French – with a focus on improving overall structure, clarity and style that conforms to the UNICEF Style Book – as well as translation of documents from English to French and from French to English.

 

Deliverables and Schedules :

The contract will specifically include the following services :

  1. Translation of documents (English French and French-English) such as reports, studies, notes, publications, strategies, plans, guidelines etc. ;
  2. Copy editing and copy writing of technical documents ;
  3. Writing of documents based on reports, studies and notes provided by UNICEF ;
  4. Proof-reading, writing and editing original copy and content on UNICEF-related activities and programme, such as :
  • Reports and publications, including annual corporate reports, brochures, meeting reports etc. ;
  • Strategies, plans, guidelines and case studies ;
  • Key messages, briefs, position papers ;
  • Others as required.

The contract will not extend to production and editing of communications materials such as press releases, media advisories, etc

Any/all of the aforementioned services may be requested in relation to the deliverables and schedule set out hereunder :

Deliverable 4 – 31 December 2020.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have

Education : Master’s degree in communication, Applicable foreign languages; a bachelor’s degree with 2 additional relevant work experience might be accepted in lieu of the Master.

Experience :

  • At least 8 years of relevant professional work experience in editing, writing and translation in the context of international development and humanitarian assistance ;
  • Excellent writing and editor/ review skills, especially in synthesizing complex information for multiple documents ;
  • The selected candidate will have excellent editing, writing and translation skills (English-French and French-English). S/he will have direct experience in using the United Nations and UNICEF West and Central Africa region, as well as prior experience in review of evidentiary documents, review of recommendations and in producing high quality translations in the context of international development. Demonstrated experience with and/or knowledge of UNICEF and the United Nations, as well as the West and Central Africa region ;
  • Knowledge of the work of UNICEF and rights-based approach ;

Language  : Fluency in English and French is required;

Administrative Issues :

The Consultant will be supervised by the Programme and Planning Manager, (PM&E section).

The consultancy will be home-based.

Communication with UNICEF and the consultant will be done remotely via email, telephone, Skype, etc. No specific IT equipment is required for the consultancy.

The application should include the following :

  • P11 ;
  • Financial offer ;
  • Cover letter explaining the candidate’s reasons for applying ;
  • 3 recent (last 12 months) examples of written and translation assignments (at least 1 of each) written/translated exclusively or primarily by the candidate, either from a professional or academic context (preferably a mixture of both). For each assignment, the contact information of the supervisor (academic or professional) to whom the assignment was submitted should be provided.

Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable law
