PURPOSE

The Development Department at the WHO Foundation is the resource mobilization arm of the Foundation and is led by the Chief Development Officer (CDO) who oversees three departments: Philanthropy (focusing on family foundations, high-net-worth individuals and philanthropists), Partnerships (focusing on corporate engagement) and Campaigns (focusing on the broader public/individual giving).

The role of the Head of Philanthropy – Europe is to oversee the development and implementation of the organization’s fundraising strategy with high-net-worth-individuals and philanthropic organizations in Europe with a specific focus on Switzerland, United Kingdom, Germany and Liechtenstein. This includes sourcing, cultivating, and soliciting major donors and collaborating with the Partnership, Campaign and Communication teams to advance the Foundation’s fundraising and awareness raising efforts.

The Head of Philanthropy – Europe will develop the strategy for the European market (with a strong focus on Switzerland) and ensure steady progress is made towards generating income from major donors, including foundations, individuals and other philanthropic organizations (e.g. funds).

REPORTS TO

The Head of Philanthropy – Europe will report to the Director of Global Philanthropy. On occasion, this position will deputize for the Director of Global Philanthropy, help provide strategic direction to the team and attend meetings and conferences on their behalf. The position is based in Geneva with some international travel.

ACCOUNTABILITIES & FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Prospect Identification, Cultivation and Solicitation

  • Identify, cultivate and solicit large gifts from major donors, including HNWI, family offices, family foundations in Europe and, in coordination with the partnerships team, corporate foundations when appropriate
  • Work with global board members, ambassadors and advisory councils to identify prospects from their networks and develop appropriate cultivation strategies to secure high level gifts.
  • Raise a target amount every year from the European market, inclusive of global donors based in the UK or Europe
  • Represent the Foundation at events and conferences in Europe, organize and manage fundraising events as appropriate

Relationship Management and Stewardship

  • Onboard major donors, plan, implement, manage, and coordinate the stewardship activities of the WHO Foundation’s major donors in Europe
  • Ensure appropriate and timely follow-up of donors following the receipt of pledges and gifts through a professional stewardship program.

Strategy Development and Execution

  • Support the Head of Global Philanthropy on the on the continued development of the overall Philanthropy team strategy, and management of team KPIs
  • Develop and deliver against a fundraising strategy for the European market
  • Support the development of foundational documents, donor proposals and appropriate supporting documents to guide the Europe philanthropic strategy.
  • Identify best practices and lessons learned directly linked to fundraising activities and contributing to early monitoring and evaluation efforts.

Reporting

  • Establish and maintain regular donor reporting cadence in partnership with the S&I and Donor Communications Manager
  • Manage the planning and reporting process, track project funding progress, and provide analysis on deviations to plan implementation and financial performance.
  • Develop, in collaboration with the Donor Communications Manager, high quality financial and narrative reports, ensuring consistency, accuracy, clarity and timely submission in compliance with WHO Foundation policies and procedures as well as donor contractual requirements.
  • Oversee compliance with WHO Foundation and donor requirements and compliance with the gifts acceptance policy, on the uses of funds, including budget monitoring, amendment requests and timely flagging of problems.

Internal Coordination and Management

  • Deputize for Director of Global Philanthropy in Senior Leadership Team and Philanthropy team meetings as required
  • Build strong relationships with colleagues at WHO as needed and lead monthly meetings with WHO Central Resource Mobilization team on behalf of Director of Global Philanthropy as needed
  • Coordinate and lead Europe strategy calls as appropriate with Partnership, Campaign, Communication, Legal and Finance teams
  • Manage consultants and subcontractors where relevant
  • Participate in staff meetings and provide written updates on progress where requested
  • Ensure harmonization between the fundraising, partnerships, communications and programming work streams for the European market
  • Ensure timely entry of donor activities and opportunities in the Salesforce database

Job requirements

PROFILE

  • A minimum of 8 to 10 years of professional experience in fundraising, prospecting and cultivating donor relationships with a focus on Europe.
  • Successful track record of developing long-term funding partnerships in Europe (Switzerland and beyond)
  • Excellent level of french and english required
  • A track record of negotiating and securing six or seven figure donations from (family) foundations and High Net Worth Individuals
  • Experience of developing and implementing a successful income strategy
  • Good knowledge of the Swiss fundraising environment, regulatory framework and giving trends
  • Strong written, verbal, and digital communication skills, including representing the organization at events and in-front of high-level donors
  • Very strong ability to use initiative, prioritize, multi-task, and work well under pressure to meet deadlines
  • Self-motivated with the capability to work independently

  • Results oriented
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office and experience using CRM systems
