Objectives of the programme :

The Office of the Director-General supports the Director-General in providing global direction to the work of the Organization within the overall framework of WHO’s Constitution, so as to maximize Organization-wide contribution to the work of Member States in achieving significant gains in health status.

Description of duties :

  1. Coordinate, in close consultation with the WHO Senior Lead on the SDG3 GAP, the work of the Secretariat of the Global Action Plan for Healthy Lives and Well-being for All, ensuring that regular meetings of the Secretariat take place to discuss progress, guide work and prioritize the allocation of resources ;
  2. Manage the financial resources to support the implementation of the GAP ;
  3. As part of the SDG3+ Global Action Plan Secretariat team, serve as Secretary of the Sherpa group and lead preparations of meetings of Principals. Ensure the timely development of agenda, background material and reports for each Sherpa meeting including regular updates to Sherpas ;
  4. As part of the SDG3+ Global Action Plan Secretariat team, manage and coordinatethe implementation of the Global Action Plan and bolster collaboration among the signatory agencies to achieve better health ;
  5. Liaise with HQ and regional level focal points and WHO country offices to support implementation of the plan within WHO and identify potential bottlenecks.6. Build strong partnerships with accelerator leads of other agencies to support implementation and identify bottlenecks ;
  6. Oversee and ensure progress against the workplan ;
  7. Lead the development of new approaches to address challenges in implementation of the GAP (such as Covid-19) ;
  8. Position the Global Action Plan on the international agenda, generate support for its implementation and represent the Secretariat. Any other duties as required.

Required qualifications :

Education :

Essential : An advanced university degree (Masters level or above) in political science, business administration, international development, public health, medical sciences or related field.
Experience

Essential :

  • At least 10 years of experience in intergovernmental and interagency collaboration in the area of sustainable development, strategic planning, development of health policies and strategies, project management and policy analysis, coordination of development cooperation, including at country level, or related field (or any combination of the foregoing) ;
  • Experience with WHO, the UN or other international organizations. Demonstrated experience at the international level.

Desirable : Similar experience of support to senior executive leadership in a large organization. Experience with the UN General Assembly, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and multi-stakeholder partnerships. Familiarity with different governance models and mechanisms in global health.

Remuneration :

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 88,162 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 6002 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
