Internship – Simulation of high Weissenberg number flow in polymer injection process

Job Environment and Context
TOTAL develops and supplies polymers for worldwide car manufacturers to enable them producing lighter-weight vehicles while keeping high performance, which therefore consume less energy and generate less CO2 emissions. In the production of car bumpers, the properties of these polymer injected products depend strongly on the polymer compounds properties and the injection conditions, which can be investigated by means of the numerical modeling and simulations (e.g. CFD, FEA) within the framework of R&D projects.
In this context, one of topics focuses on using CFD to simulate the polymer injection process to predict flow marks in order to better identify the injection windows and to accelerate new polymer R&D in TRTF.

Objectives, Missions and Tasks
The candidate will be involved in the numerical study of the viscoelastic behavior for a polymer melt flow, inside a thin plate using OpenFOAM. The HPC supercomputing facilities of TOTAL will be used (PANGEA).
The internship plan focuses on the following objectives:

  • Upgrade the existing model in OpenFOAM to a multimode viscoelastic model
  • Implement other viscoelastic models in the literature
  • Perform the simulations in a thin plate to investigate the influence of inlet shape
  • Implement additional numerical stabilization of viscoelastic model if necessary

Profil recherché

Desired skills:
Academic knowledge of fluid mechanics and numerical simulation.
Knowledge of C++ and scripting in LINUX environment. Knowledge on OpenFOAM CFD platform desired but not essential.
Good knowledge of English language; excellent reporting and communication skills; ability to work in a multicultural environment and team work

Current Level of Studies
You are currently validating a Msc level course (Bac+5) of study and you are looking for a 4-6 month internship (starting before summer 2021)
